I thought that an escrow account was set up from the onset of the loan for my taxes and insurance. It wasn't until much later that I found out that it hadn't and that the mortgage company had footed the bill. They are now demanding $18,000.

Not good. Probably not much you can do other than pay it or work with the lender to have them modify your loan terms to allow you to pay it over time.
